Speech Therapy In Santa Clarita
I recently had a parent ask for recommendations regarding Speech Therapy and that prompted a deep dive into local options. I was surprised to find so many great options locally, some in clinic, some in home, and some virtual. I decided to create this post so that other parents seeking information can use it as well.
During my time looking into the options, I got to email or talk with some of these companies directly, and it was really fun learning about how some of them got started and to see how passionate many of them are. I hope you find this information useful.
A Bit About Speech Therapists
I wanted to discuss a little bit about Speech Therapy before we get into the different businesses. Many people do not know much about it. Speech therapy is provided by a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP for short) or a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA for short). These are both considered trained health professionals. They are licensed by the State of California through the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
It takes a lot of work to become a Speech-Language Pathologist. SLP’s must complete both a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s Degree. Clinical hours under the supervision of an already licensed SLP are also required. In order to become licensed, they must also pass a national examination, the Praxis Subject Assessment in Speech-Language Pathology.
Becoming a SLPA is a bit easier and only requires an Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree through a technical school. They complete clinical hours prior to becoming licensed as well. SLPA’s work underneath a SLP and there are rules about what they can and cannot do. SLPA’s are licensed by the same board as Speech-Language Pathologists.
What is Speech Therapy
Speech therapy is designed to help children overcome difficulties with communication and express themselves with confidence. This can include struggles with pronouncing certain sounds, understanding others, or putting words in the correct order. Depending on specialties, speech therapy can assist with feeding and swallowing difficulties. SLP’s utilize play-based strategies when working with young children and often play games or read stories. Exercises to improve strength in the muscles involved in speech are also used. In instances where traditional communication is not possible, SLP’s can provide tools and alternatives. It is important for you as a parent to follow through on the homework given by the Speech-Language Pathologist in order for therapy to work.
If you want a bit more information about Speech Therapy, I love the Cleveland Clinic’s information. The Cleveland Clinic is a great resource for information on different diagnoses and treatments.
